Mami Wata x Angola Waves

A week in Angola was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. We never cease to be spellbound by Africa’s majestic coastline, and the endless possibilities it offers.

Imraan, our CEO, made the trip to Caboledo, about two hours south of Luanda. For him, this was an opportunity to make connections, share stories, and witness a place with a growing surf culture that has long captured our imagination.

We sat down with Imraan to ask him how the trip was, and what he was doing there in the first place.

“Angola is incredible,” he told us. “The people are epic, and the waves were crazy good. The surf scene has so much potential, dude. So many waves are still unexplored, and there’s an incredible pool of talent out there from a surfing perspective that the world doesn't know about and needs to know about. Also there is an immense amount of work needed to be done to support the process of uplifting African youth.”

“I was travelling with an amazing photographer called Tom Prentice, who we did some cool shoots with – stay tuned. We were both hosted by the legendary Bizuka Barros who started Angola Waves - one of the first surf schools in Angola.”

“I took over a few things for the surfers over there. We specifically designed some rash vests for the surf school, which we donated with our epic surfboard, the Braai Brood. We also took some of our stock, which we co-branded alongside Angola Waves. It’s available to buy in Bizuka’s surf shop.”

Angola Waves sits beneath a rocky-crested ridgeline in Caboledo, where you’ll find the long-peeling left pointbreak that answers the question ‘why there?’

“Dude, I caught a 400m wave one of the days. A proper leg burner,” Immie beamed. “Angola had some of the longest waves I've ever seen, and if you were longboarding I think you could get a 700m wave from the top of the point all the way in. The water was warm and clean and full of life.”

For the locals, they were thrilled to have a representative of Mami Wata there. “They have been massive fans of the brand,” Imraan said. “They were so excited to get some of our stock in their store. I think they sold about 20% of all the stock we sent them already. This highlights the opportunity for both Angola Waves and Mami Wata to have a presence in Africa.”
