About Mami Wata
We started Mami Wata because of love and belief. Our love for surfing, design and Africa. Our belief in the Power of African surf.
Mami Wata is an African surf apparel brand based in Cape Town, South Africa. Since launching in 2017, our mission has been to connect the world to the power of African surf culture. Our name comes from West African pidgin English. “Mami Wata” means Mother of the Ocean. Across the continent, from Madagascar to Morocco, Liberia to Mozambique, Mami Wata is the African water spirit who often appears as a mermaid. She is said to bless those she loves with renewed spirit, beauty, and success. A symbol of fertility and protection, she guards women, children, sea creatures, and the natural environment.
Our Mission: To be a creative force for good in Africa
We focus on three pillars that bring African surf culture to life and create lasting impact.
1. Supporting African youth surf therapy organisations
Two percent of all sales go to 2%, the independent Mami Wata African Surf Trust. This trust supports leading organisations such as Waves for Change and Surfers Not Street Children, which together reach more than 1,600 children every day. Our work with them was recognised with a Nelson Mandela Change Maker Award in 2023.
2. Manufacturing in Africa
Most of our apparel, surfboards, and accessories are designed and produced in Africa. This approach creates jobs, builds skills, and strengthens local economies. We use African cotton and sustainable practices, and compostable or recycled packaging whenever possible.
3. Afrosurfonomics
Surfing creates economic, social, and environmental value for local communities. By sharing the stories of Africa’s waves and surf culture, we inspire surfers from around the world to visit and ensure that local communities benefit.
